First Aid Course Description

Attentive Safety offers the American Red Cross First Aid course to help participants recognize and respond appropriately to first aid emergencies. This course provides
participants with the knowledge and skills needed to give immediate care to an injured or ill person when minutes matter, and to decide whether advanced medical care is needed.

​First aid, or the initial care provided for an acute illness or injury, has the goals of preserving life, alleviating suffering, preventing further illness or injury, and promoting recovery. First aid can be initiated by anyone in any situation and includes self-care. General characteristics of the provision of first aid, at any level of training, include recognizing, assessing, and prioritizing the need for first aid; providing care using appropriate competencies; and recognizing limitations and seeking additional treatment when needed, such as activating emergency medical services or seeking other medical assistance (emergency services).

After completing First Aid, students should be able to:
  • List the priorities, roles, and responsibilities of the first aid rescuer
  • Describe the key steps in first aid
  • Remove protective gloves
  • Find the problem
  • Describe the assessment and first aid actions for the following life-threatening conditions: heart attack, difficulty breathing, choking, severe bleeding, shock, and stroke
  • Use an epinephrine pen
  • Control bleeding and bandaging
  • Recognize elements of common injuries
  • Recognize elements of common illnesses
  • Describe how to find information on preventing illness and injury
  • Recognize the legal questions that apply to first aid rescuers

First Aid Course Audience

First Aid is intended for anyone with little or no medical training who needs a course completion card for job, regulatory (e.g. OSHA), or other requirements. This course can also be taken by anyone who wants to be prepared for an emergency in any setting.

First Aid Course Completion Card

Immediately upon completion ​students receive an American Red Cross ​First Aid course completion card, valid for two years.
